Fear of the Lord

And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Matthew 10:28

What is it that you fear? As humans we are full of fears, in fact there are many books written to explain all the fears we have developed as humans. We have developed whole fields of study to help us compensate for our fears when in fact there is only one whom we should fear. God! That’s correct. Why would I say this? Isn’t God Love? When are we going to wake up and smell the coffee?

The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of knowledge: [but] fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:7

The fear of the LORD [is] clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD [are] true [and] righteous altogether. Psalms 19:9

I believe for the last 1900 or so years we have forgotten who God is. Since the apostles passed we have not seen the hand of God. There hasn’t been another flood which destroyed the earth and all humanity except Noah and his family, there hasn’t been another Sodom or Gomorrah destroyed by fire and brimstone with all inhabitants completely destroyed; another red sea parted with pharaoh's whole army destroyed, or another Jericho whose walls came down with all those inside destroyed except for one family. Since entering into the age of grace we don’t see the hand of God and this has caused us to lose our fear of the One who can destroy the body and the soul in Hell.

When Jesus Christ said “it is finished” and committed His soul to the Father, He took all our sins upon Himself, past present and future. The greatest gift ever given man was made available free to all who would believe on the Son of God, confess his sin, repent (turn away) from his sin and commit his soul into the Saviors hands. It was now up to man to decide whom he would follow.

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Matthew 6:24

God in His love for His creation gave His Son as a sacrifice for our sinful nature so we could gain back the relationship we lost in the garden and again become sons of God. He again gave us the choice to either love Him or reject Him. Christ made it perfectly clear; we cannot serve and love ourselves more than God. To believe in and have faith in God is a heart condition, it is the heart that God looks at, and it is the true indicator of whom you serve.

As we enter the most exciting time in history for the Christian let us not forget all the wonderful gifts God has given us nor forget to gain in knowledge and wisdom in our fear of the God who can kill both body and soul in Hell.

But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil. Proverbs 1:33

Yes I believe God is Love! I believe He loves us so much He was willing, and not just willing but planned before the earth was formed, to send His only begotten to be crucified to reconcile sinful man and produce redeemed man, a much higher form so that we could have an eternal relationship with Him. But if you believe that God is perfect then you know He also is Holy, He is righteous and all the other things He must be to be perfect. If all you know is a God of love then you have missed the true God. The God of creation is a perfect God with a perfect plan for His children.

We are told as we near the end times there will be great apostasy (a falling away from the faith) and we see that happening in today’s world; many denominations and churches are failing to preach the true gospel and corrupting God’s word. We have lost our fear of God and as the Bible tells us “denying the truth and preferring the lie.” I believe today is the day we need to search our hearts and find out where we stand. I have thought for some time now that we are seeing a great separation taking place. Those who have accepted Christ in their hearts are growing stronger and closer to God and those who are denying God are becoming more vocal and determined in their hearts to believe the lie and live their lives to please themselves.

Be of good courage Christian, you serve a faithful God!

But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil. Proverbs 1:33

As Jack Kelly likes to say, ‘If you listen closely you can almost hear the footsteps of the Saviour.’

I have been doing a great deal of study on the parables of Christ in the New Testament. I am convinced they have as much if not more meaning for us today as they had for the people Christ was teaching while on earth so I will be devoting some time to them in the near future. I hope you will be looking for them with the same enthusiasm that I have in presenting them in the devotions.
